I have been sailing with Greenpeace for over four years. I got my first
Greenpeace job because I was working commercially on a ship called the
Grampian Guardian, which Greenpeace chartered and called the Amazon
Guardian. When the Greenpeace people came to pick up the ship, I asked
them for a job.
A few weeks later I got a call, and sailed on the MV Greenpeace. I had
been trying for a while to get on board a Greenpeace ship - having made
a moral decision to work for Greenpeace after being a fisherman for
six years. As a fisherman, one of the techniques I used was bottom dredging,
which is very bad for the ocean but I didn't think about it at the time
because I had other things on my mind, like paying the rent.
I was also a diver, and there was a special reef that me and a friend
used to dive at. I didn't tell anyone else about it. One day when I
was working on a clam boat, we were dredging and went over the reef.
It didn't occur to me at the time, but a few months later I got off
the ship and went diving at the reef. I saw that it was destroyed. That's
when I decided to work for Greenpeace.
