The Sea Turtle Story
by Nyssa on 16 May 2001 @ 12:27 PM

hi anne and bluplanet

I had a story about the illegal slaughter of sea turtles published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday..plus a photo of a denpasar slaughterhouse...i also sold the video footage of the same slaughterhouse to the ABC Foreign Correspondent Program..which aired on wednesday night and elicited a huge response

i went back to bali because i had to get more footage and because wewe ( tanjung benoas leading turtle trader was being convicted that day)..he got a year in jail and 3 million rupea fine...i met everyone there ( at the court that day) the activists ( earth advocate people who have been attacked by wewe and his men on previous occasions...petrol was poured on **** and on **** car the KSDK)...i interviewed a prominent high priest who has spoken out about the issue...i bribed my way into the turtle pens at tanjung benoa and now have footage of that plus the trucks that carry them to the slaughterhouses....plus the turtle boats and police ( i have the proof that they are corrupt) they lied to me and told me it was lobster in the pens when not five minutes before i had seen the turtles for myself ( and taken pictures) ...later that night i saw them at the dock while a turtle boat was there..waiting to unload... this all took place after wewes conviction....i have pictures of turtle meat... turtle heads and turtle sates...the people involved...the judge himself...he spoke to all of us after the conviction and i have pictures of that as well...all this damming footage has been passed on to my contacts who i cannot name who have already taken them to the authorities...they believe this footage will provide enough proof to make more arrests ( we shall see)...in the meantime i am making a documentary about the whole thing...

thats it for now

Nyssa,
I had a whole list of superlatives on the tip of my tongue, but will confine myself to "UTTERLY FANTASTIC" to avoid possible embarrassment.
Best regards,
Uncle John

On Page 27 of the "Lonely Planet Guide to Bali and Lombok" there is a speel about green sea turtles and Greenpeaces 'campaign' to protect them...

this is what the blurb says ..in its entirety

"Green sea turtles are found in the waters around Bali and throughout Indonesia. Tragically about 30,000 are killed each year for meat and shell and Bali is the site of the most intensive slaughter of this species in the world. The turtles are also constantly threatened by waters polluted by plastic bags, sewerage and oil leaks.

The environmental group Greenpeace has long campaigned to protect Indonesia's sea turtles. It appeals to travellers not to eat turtle meat or buy any turtle products, including shells, stuffed turtles and turtle leather goods. In any case, its illegal to export any products made of green sea turtles from Indonesia. In many countries, including AUstralia, the UK, the USA and other EU countries, it is illegal to import turtle products without a permit."

I have been to Indonesia twice in recent months and saw no evidence of Greenpeace of their presence there during that time..when a lot of stuff was going down ( the issue is coming to a head now)

The people who are saving the turtles comprise a small group of dedicated individuals: Robin Marinos and Joan Leahy from Earth Advocates, a local restauranteur who shall remain anonymous who buys back turtles from the traders and conserves their eggs...also the KSBK people an Indonesian Conservation Group....the WWF is also working on the problem in a more passive/educative way which focuses more on protecting turtle nesting sites...also a high priest there...Idi Pedanda...and me ofcourse in my own small way...the doco...the sea turtle rescue foundation i have set up...Robert de Roy who has made a very generous donation to the cause...every cent of which was used to buy back a turtle...

But Greenpeace...i saw no evidence of their presence there...past or present...there's been no interest in the issue expressed here at the site...my request for help to one of the head honchos here fell on deaf ears...????

I would really appreciate it if some one here could please explain how the lonely planet came to include such erroneous information in their guide book...

I have recently learned that 'Wewe' Tanjung Benoas leading turtle trader who was convicted of trading in a protected species last month and sentenced to one year in jail...is not in jail...he has gone into hidiing...meanwhile the slaughter continues...i have already mentioned that i saw a bunch of turtles in the pens at TJ two days after wewes conviction and one night (the day he was convicted) ...i saw five immature green sea turtles lined up in a dark alleway at TJ that led straight to the pens...as i said i saw police at the pens on the friday i saw the turtles and they lied to me...anyway suffice to say the trade goes on

This came my way recently...from an article by Ardi Bramantyo and Rofiqi Hasan ( Tempo)...

"Twenty green turtles are crowded into a narrow holding area, each of their front flippers are bound...the large reptiles measuring around 80 cm in diameter are still, submissive...when the appointed time arrives, between two and four men carry them out...the butcher then lays the turtle on the cement floor on their backs and cuts their chest open with a cleaver...the torsos are split apart and flesh is removed in strips from the still living animals...this scene took place at the end of last week at a turtle meat store in the Pemogan area of Denpasar"
