Re: galapagos crisis
by Anonymous on 21 May 2001 @ 10:17 AM

Hello, I ready your statement about the galapagos Islands and truely agree with you very much. I have been there and will return many times because of the nature and the true serenity. I just saw on the news about the fisherman of the galapagos over fishing and getting away with it because they over power the number of people enforcing the rules. I do not agree with many of the greenpeace issues. Mainly because I am ex-military, but this issue I take to heart. I was wondering why greenpeace does not send supporters to galapagos to assist in enforcing the laws of ecuadors fishing rules. Not only would this help save such a beautiful place but will also gain support from many people that view greenpeace members as extreme activists in the face of the law. Something needs to be done and I feel it should be pushed by greenpeace, this area is very fragile and can be changed very quicly, so we need to react very quickly. I would even be willing to go back to help if needed. thank you for listening and I hope you understand where I am coming from on this issue.

The overfishing in the Galapagos is not unknown to most environmental groups. However, lack of funds and resources prevents them from tackling the limited effects a campaign would provide.

Sea Shepherd Org is one group that IS tackling the issue, sometimes quite physically. See their site at
http://www.seashepherd.org

There is an action link on the Ocean Group homepage for you to send a letter of protest. Click "Groups" top-right for the overfishing issue and many other links concerning our seas. Thanks for your concern.

Peace,
Tig

    Hello everyone,

the lack of protection and law enforcment around these important islands is an environmental disgrace. Look at the latest example of human excess:-

Mutilated sea lions found in Galapagos Islands

We really need to push the controlling powers harder, and try to eradicate the demand for such wares!

    Best regards,
    Uncle John

I don't know much about these Islands but reading your post and looking at the article on the website, I see that something has to be done about this slaughter. It seems that there is no protection whatsoever around the animals of the Islands.

Perhaps a petition of some kind?

      Yours,
      Hannah R
