galapagos crisis
by doubleT on 17 December 2000 @ 03:06 AM

has anyone heard any news on the fishermen's rebellion against conservation laws in the galapagos? last i heard, the fishermen had taken over the charles darwin research station (jeopardizing the baby tortoises there) threatened to kill conservation officials, driven several officers off the islands completely and ruined the homes of others. they have been granted a 30,000 ton lobster extension for the season, but are still unsatified an are talking about more rebellions in order to be allowed to take more sea cucumbers, and to do long line fishing (which endangers the albatross and sea lions of the islands). i am wondering if anyone has news of more recent developments (all this happened in november). i am also wondering why none of the green organizations are talking about this...i've visited many websites and found very little info. are the galapagos not one of our greatest international treasures??
