Buy Nothing Day events in Ottawa report
by Underlord on 13 December 2000 @ 08:50 PM

Hi there!

Here are the many events that took place in Ottawa, Canada, organised by the Enviro Action committee of the Ottawa University Ontario Public Interest Research Group (Ottawa OPIRG).

Information booths were set up on the 17th and the 22nd in our University’s centre to inform people of upcoming local BND events and what BND is all about

A SWAP was held on the 20th and the 21st in the university's agora so that people could exchange their goods without consuming new ones. We donated the remaining SWAP items to a nearby homeless shelter.

In the evening of the 23rd, the group also advertised for BND by chalking it up on campus. Another part of the group went to the Rideau Centre, the main shopping mall of downtown Ottawa, to also distribute pamphlets and let consumers know about the events of the next day.

Finally, on a cold November 24th afternoon, clients of the Coffee Revolution and other pedestrian passers-by, were entertained by members of our committee. The a small street theater performance was put on, consisting of a mock duel between Conservation and Consumerism which ended in them vowing to help make responsible consumers out of us all.

Attempts to pass the BND uncommercial on Rogers Community Television and The New RO (part of the CHUM FM network) were unsuccessful. Rogers stated that Public Service Announcements cannot incite people to participate in a rally or demonstration. The New RO, after fruitful negotiations with one of their sales agent, successfully avoided the blame by asking for a telecaster number.

CHUO however, the University of Ottawa radio station, gladly accepted the commercial. As a suggestion for next year, our group thought that Adbusters Media Foundation should make more of their uncommercials in radio format. They could be easily distributed on university radio stations, would be less expensive and could even be used for computer start-up sounds!
