Canada Pursues Micro Fuel Cells
by Raphaël Lesage on 16 November 2002 @ 12:22 AM

A first in Canada, the Alberta Research Council (ARC) reached a milestone in the technical development of its own version of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology. ARC scientists are developing a proprietary micro solid oxide fuel cell (µ-SOFC) source of energy for small-scale portable applications such as laptops or personal digital assistants (PDAs).Source: http://www.spacedaily.com/news/energy-tech-02u.html

It appears that the fuel cells are less polluting to operate than using normal electricity by nuclear or fossil fuel, but the manafacture and disposal of the devices seems that it might create an issue, like alkaline metals and mercury in batteries. The pollution might be temporarily ignored if the cells possess even marginal longevity, but I don't think that it is a good thing to have one more disposable electrical source. Even if the cells were environmentally friendly chemically, we don't need a new form of litter. I am all for this new power source if it does not contain harmful substances and is at least recyclable or reusable. Otherwise, we are just as well off without them.
